Magnolia Denver’s Historically Inspired Revival

The story of the acclaimed Magnolia Hotels begins with the purchase of its flagship location in Denver, Colorado, in 1993. Originally home to the First National Bank of Colorado, the landmark building was designed and constructed by Denver architect Harry Edbrooke in 1911. As one of Denver’s first skyscrapers, the building is an exemplar edifice to the progress of The Queen City and is adorned with historic details on its terra cotta exterior. By investing in this historic building, Stout Street Hospitality, the family-owned company with the vision to create the Magnolia Hotel brand, carries on its diligent stewardship of iconic Denver architecture, ensuring that the city evolves without diminishing its rich history.

Sitting within Magnolia Denver’s historic bones, Harry’s Bar both serves as a space for hotel guests to unwind and stands on its own as a local favorite. The bar’s connection to the hotel lobby creates a shared energy that brings the best of the city inside its walls.

OZ has been selected to re-imagine the lobby, entry drop-off experience and Harry’s Bar within the Magnolia Denver. The property has been added to the Starwood Tribute Portfolio and underwent an extensive guest room renovation recently as well. Construction is now underway for the public space upgrades.

The rich history of the building serves as the main design driver for the renovation. As you step foot inside this property, a wall installation featuring re-purposed deposit boxes will create a signature moment essential for today’s photo-centric traveler. An updated pallet made up of neutral earth tones, rich greens and accents of brass will reflect colors found in the west and bring the same sense of luxury found in bank lobbies of the past. These colors will carry into “Harry’s” on the ground level, paired with antiqued metal and deep wood tones. The removal of walls between the lobby and the bar as well as an expansion of the check-in area both add natural light and create a free-flowing space for guests to enjoy.

OZ Architecture has also designed the update for the entry drive within the building’s courtyard and the entry canopy, further boosting the natural light within the space. These elements have been carefully planned to maintain the historic character of the building’s façade as the property is in a historic overlay zone.

Magnolia’s welcoming experience for guests and visitors will be revitalized from curb to cocktail hour to comfortable pillow. The lobby and Harry’s Bar will dovetail the bustling spirit of downtown Denver and reveal a modernized design with key elements that remain a tie to the historic past.
