Highly Anticipated Snowmass Base Village Renovations Finally Break Ground

This month, developers celebrated the erection of steel for the restart of construction for Snowmass Base Village. A collaboration between East West Partners (EWP), Aspen Skiing Company (ASC) and KSL Capital Partners, this is the largest ski area village development currently underway in North America. OZ Architecture has been involved in the mountain resort development since 2002, with architects Becky Stone, Mairi Mashburn, and Greg Lemon and a great OZ Architecture team working on the project.

The highly-anticipated development includes a new Base Village hotel, the Limelight, along with new amenities including a summer public plaza and an ice rink in the winter— significant developments to the 50-year-old resort. The new 100-room, 11-residence Limelight Hotel includes an indoor/outdoor lounge and restaurant, fitness center, climbing wall, and hot tubs. What’s more, an exclusive Snowmass Mountain Club will offer skier amenities like parking, lockers and a private lounge. OZ designed the mountain-contemporary building to overlook jaw-dropping mountain views as well as the upgraded public plaza, which will serve as the community’s outdoor gathering space with fire pits, children’s fountains, and an ice-skating rink that transforms into a green events lawn in the summer.

Construction has also begun on the Lumen, a three-condominium building. The Lumen and the Limelight will flank the plaza adjacent to the Snowmass Mountain Gondola.

After initial construction was halted in 2008, Related Snowmass and the Aspen Skiing Co. finally continued the developments, which promise to rejuvenate the popular resort area and deliver the enhanced experience skiers have been waiting for. OZ Architecture’s contributions will enhance an eclectic village feel for a contemporary, community oriented result blending traditional alpine elements with modern resort amenities.

Completion of the Limelight and plaza is slated for late 2018, and the Snowmass Base Village Plaza renovations are expected to continue into 2019.
