Magnolia Houston’s Remodel Pays Homage to the Bayou City’s Roots

In the early 1900’s, the oil trade transformed Houston from a small town to large city, and in 1926 Ross Sterling built the tallest skyscraper at the time for his newspaper/radio conglomerate, the Houston Post-Dispatch. The newspaper and radio station became the prominent source of news connecting the community.

The paper’s prestige and circulation continued, however the Post-Dispatch building changed hands and was vacant by 1995. It’s storied presence on Texas Avenue was restored by Stout Street Hospitality into a Magnolia Hotel and this architectural beacon of news and community was brought back to life as a boutique experience for guests.

As experts of preserving character and weaving a rich history into design, OZ was selected to design the interior remodel of Magnolia Houston’s hotel common spaces, lobby, bar and guest rooms. Stout Street Hospitality is partnering with Starwood Hotels and this property will join the Starwood Tribute Portfolio of amazing, yet independent hotels. OZ Architecture has a deep history working with Starwood and this experience with overlaying the brand standards onto a boutique property has been extremely smooth. The Tribute brand allows Magnolia Hotel Houston to remain true to it’s roots at the same time it will deliver the brand-promise of Starwood.

Magnolia Houston pays homage to city, building, and brand by creating a boutique experience that builds upon the roots of the architecture it preserves. OZ’s interior refresh includes touchpoints from the Post-Dispatch Building’s original use combined with the city’s contrasts of bright polish and moody patina. The design is inspired by the daily ritual of reading the news, with its nostalgic smell of newsprint and the excitement of cracking open the day’s stories. This experience conjures a sense of community, knowledge, and humanity that makes you feel at home – a fleeting experience in this digital age.

Houston, also known as the Bayou City, has a unique blend of southern ambiance and western adventure. This is represented in color, texture, and woven patterns throughout the spaces which speak to a refined sensibility with a wild side.  OZ’s re-design of the lobby, bar, and the guestrooms will be a vibrant expression of the city’s energy and the building’s history, solidifying Magnolia Houston’s presence as a storied boutique experience and the newest addition to the Tribute Portfolio in Houston and beyond.
