McMurdo Station Master Plan, Antarctica

Antarctica’s largest community, McMurdo Station was established in 1955 and  is built on Ross Island’s bare volcanic rock, the solid ground farthest south that is accessible by ship.  The logistics hub of the U.S. Antarctic program, the Station’s structures range from a small radio shack to three-story buildings, all linked by above-ground water, sewer, telephone and power lines.

After extensive tours and interviews on-site at every work and support center, the team developed a comprehensive master plan addressing site issues, building efficiency and function, logistics management, information technologies, energy conservation and quality of life improvements for the often stressful experience of living and working in the arctic environment.
