As the Town of Erie doubled its population and rapidly expanded its service area, the Public Works and Parks Departments needed a new  facility to house the two departments and maintain their equipment.  With industrial land a rare commodity, the facility was sited across the street from a new subdivision.   The building integrates into the neighborhood through the use of similar materials, colors, stepped massing, and setbacks.  A completely enclosed exterior yard contains a truck wash, enclosed equipment storage, a fuel island, sand and salt storage, magnesium chloride storage, and both covered and open storage.  Green technologies are incorporated including solar panels and lighting, heat recovery systems, pervious paving, and daylighting so the garage’s heating and cooling systems are rarely needed.
