We're excited to share the next installment of Design for the Frontline, where our Civic Practice Area leaders sit down with fire chiefs overseeing OZ-designed stations in communities of all sizes for candid conversions on everything from firefighter safety and well-being to sustainability and future planning.
This episode includes OZ Principal Kevin Schaffer and Monument Fire District Fire Chief Andy Kovacs, MPA, EFO, CFO, FSEDI Alumni. Chief Kovacs has been a dedicated public safety leader for over three decades. His career experience spans multiple agencies, including Orange County Fire Authority in California, the Brighton Fire Rescue District, and now the Monument Fire District (MFD).
The MFD is in northwestern El Paso County and encompasses five stations serving approximately 43,000 residents. This district was formed by consolidating two previous agencies: the Tri-Lakes Monument Fire Protection District and the Donald Wescott Fire Protection District. Beyond its core service area, the MFD provides mutual aid to the U.S. Forest Service in the Mount Herman area, ensuring a coordinated response to wildfires and other emergencies in the area. MFD thoroughly reviewed its resources as part of its agency consolidation in 2022. MFD engaged OZ to help with this process. OZ and MFD are working on a new design for Station 3.
In this conversation, Kevin and Chief Kovacs explore how the Monument area’s growth and the focus on firefighter safety are behind the need for new and updated facilities and how, together, OZ and Monument Fire District are making design decisions that center on what the community needs—now and down the road.
