Celebrating Improper City, a 2022 Mayor’s Design Award Winner

November 16, 2022

We're thrilled to announce that Improper City has been awarded Denver’s esteemed Mayor’s Design Award for Neighborhood Gem! As the “living room of RiNo,” Improper City was designed as a dynamic and energetic multi-use space that caters to a wide variety of social activities, encouraging guests to choose their own adventures.

Located in RiNo Art District, Improper City is designed to host guests indoors and outdoors, with unparalleled flexibility and opportunities for activation for both public and private events year-round.

Outside, guests will find an expansive dog-friendly patio that frequently showcases live music, and an art-splashed alleyway that welcomes food trucks, along with a spacious green area ideal for larger social gatherings. Featuring exterior works from internationally recognized artists — including Marissa Napoletano, Casey Kawaguchi and Max Coleman — Improper City has quickly become a community landmark.

Inside guests are greeted by a lively bar flanked by flexible, modern coworking space that adjusts to host everything from meetings and events to a lively bar crowd. Once home to a 1947 HVAC fabrication factory, our design team preserved key architectural elements while transforming the building for day-to-night activation featuring a variety of seating configurations, lounge areas, and a multi-use bar that serves coffee and tea during the day and transitions to serve an array of on-tap libations, craft cans, and cocktail classics through the evening. A mezzanine, named “The Perch,” offers additional workspace that can also host more intimate, semi-private gatherings, sharing a view into the bustling hybrid work-play landscape.

We are so proud of the community being built at Improper City and feel honored that our design can continue to facilitate the fun and creativity occurring throughout this special space.
