OZ Principal, Jami Mohlenkamp, Speaks at Legislative Caucus on Aging

April 16, 2018

Earlier this year, OZ Architecture’s Jami Mohlenkamp spoke at the Colorado State Capitol at the Legislative Caucus on Aging organized by the Strategic Action Planning Group on Aging, in partnership with Aging 2.0. His goal? To shed light on the ways people think about housing options for the aging. In particular, Jami spoke about combatting ageism and ways to support aging populations in maintaining dignity and independence as they grow older.

Jami’s talk included a reference to tiny homes, and how small, efficient and affordable spaces can still deliver that sense of “the American dream.” He showed examples of fully accessible “granny pods,” private wheelchair- and walker-friendly spaces, and energy-efficient spaces to keep utility costs low and reduce the strain on natural resources.

Jami also touched on ideas of transportation. With a world moving toward driverless cars, what does that look for those who are mobility-challenged? Gondola-style cars with sliding doors and accessible ramps may not be that far off. Simple ideas executed with proactive thinking can happen without being reactionary, Jami said.

To an audience of rights advocates for older adults, housing experts and political activists, Jami encouraged thinking outside the box in terms of what a senior care community can look like.

Although there are plenty of challenges ahead, groups like the Strategic Action Planning Group on Aging are dedicated to informing and recommending on policymakers’ decisions to ensure older adults remain a vital part of our communities. We at OZ Architecture are proud to be part of that effort.
