AI & Robotics in Older Adult Communities: Technology that Enhances the Human Experience

For generations, popular culture has imagined robots as part of daily life. From The Jetsons’ Rosie to today’s rapidly advancing AI tools, what once felt like science fiction is starting to take shape.

In older adult communities, robotics and AI are beginning to move beyond novelty. These tools can improve efficiency, support staff, and increase resident engagement, while helping address one of the biggest challenges in senior living: social isolation. Adoption is still early, but two Colorado communities offer a clear preview of what’s possible.

Case Study 1: Dining Robots at Christian Living Communities' Holly Creek Campus

At Christian Living Communities’ Holly Creek campus in Centennial, three autonomous dining robots, aptly named Rose, Dorothy, and Blanche, are now part of the daily dining experience.

They don’t serve residents directly. Instead, they transport meals from the kitchen to dining staff, allowing human servers to focus on greeting residents, answering questions, and delivering meals with a personal touch. That distinction is intentional.

According to Tom Ingalls, Director of Dining for Morrison Living’s Duet Dining program, the robots were never meant to replace staff. Instead, they reduce the constant back-and-forth trips between the kitchen and dining room. On a typical shift, servers may walk up to five miles. By taking over those repetitive tasks, the robots ease physical demands and give staff more time to connect with residents.

They also help address ongoing workforce pressures. Unlike employees, robots don’t call in sick or require schedule adjustments. Still, Ingalls notes that labor savings alone don’t justify the investment. Staffing levels have stayed largely the same. The real benefit is a smoother workflow and allowing staff to focus on what people do best: building relationships.

The robots have also become a point of interest for prospective residents, who enjoy seeing them in action. Holly Creek plans to keep them as part of an upcoming dining renovation, where they signal the community’s openness to new technology.

There are practical challenges. Because robots and people share the same pathways, bottlenecks can occur, especially when entering the kitchen. These kinds of issues introduce new considerations for architects and designers. Future dining spaces may need dedicated robot paths, access doors between kitchen and dining areas, charging stations, storage, and enough clearance for safe circulation.

Case Study 2: Ryan the Companion Robot at Eaton Senior Communities

While Holly Creek’s robots focus on operations, Eaton Senior Communities in Lakewood is exploring a different use for robotics.

As part of its culture of curiosity, Eaton introduced Ryan, an AI-powered companion robot developed through a collaboration between DreamFace Technologies and the University of Denver. Rather than transporting items, Ryan is designed to interact with residents through conversation, games, music, and reminders.

Ryan uses artificial emotional intelligence to make eye contact, recognize facial expressions, and respond to tone of voice. It can lead trivia games, support exercise programs, play personalized music, display family photos, and provide medication reminders. It also incorporates tools used in cognitive behavioral therapy.

CEO Diana Delgado describes Ryan as another member of the team, not a replacement for caregivers. Eaton is introducing the robot gradually through group activities and one-on-one interactions, with a focus on residents experiencing isolation, depression, or transitions into the community.

During earlier pilot programs, one resident who rarely left his apartment due to oxygen dependency began engaging regularly with Ryan. Over time, the robot became a social catalyst, drawing neighbors in and sparking conversations that might not have happened otherwise. Rather than replacing human interaction, it helped create more of it.

Like any new system, companion robots require thoughtful integration. Eaton has developed scheduling, charging, cleaning, and oversight processes to support Ryan’s daily use. These details show that successful implementation depends just as much on operations as on the technology itself.

Designing for an AI-Assisted Future

As robotics become more common in senior living, architects and operators will need to consider how these tools shape the built environment.

Basic decisions, such as where to place charging stations, storage, and wireless infrastructure, may become standard. Designers will also need to plan for safe movement alongside residents with varying mobility needs, including those using walkers, wheelchairs, or other devices, as well as individuals with limited vision.

Just as important, communities will need to decide where technology adds value and where human interaction remains essential.

The most effective examples today share a clear approach: use robotics to handle repetitive tasks so staff can focus on relationships, hospitality, and personalized care. Whether transporting meals or engaging residents in conversation, AI works best when it supports caregivers rather than replacing them.

Technology will continue to evolve. The opportunity for older adult communities is not to reduce human connection, but to strengthen it. When used thoughtfully, AI and robotics can improve efficiency while preserving, and even enhancing, the relationships at the core of exceptional care.
