Foundry Loveland Wins 2020 Governor's Award for Downtown Excellence

November 18, 2020

We’re excited to announce that Foundry Loveland is a winner of a 2020 Governor’s Award for Downtown Excellence.

This award recognizes excellence in exemplary commitment to the formation of projects which further enhanced and encouraged the integrity and potential of an area. The exemplary projects positively impacted the local community through commitment to the downtown, larger plan of the community, and overall culture and nature of the community where it resides.

The Foundry is a multi-block mixed-use redevelopment in the heart of Loveland’s historic downtown district aimed at revitalizing the area with a special focus on supporting local art.

Planning for The Foundry spanned almost ten years, with city officials ensuring it was suited to what the people of Loveland need. OZ used public feedback to create a design to incorporate the art culture and included amenities to unify the community and improve the downtown Loveland district.

The primary feature of The Foundry design is a centralized outdoor urban square – a destination for families to gather and an active place for artists and performers to share their creativity. OZ intentionally designed this plaza within the development to create a safe space away from traffic and noise that allows more connectivity with one another while still feeling open and shared with a sprawling lawn.

OZ developed methods to slightly elevate the crossway and slow traffic flow near the urban square for easy pedestrian crossing and more room for food trucks, pop-up activities and shops, and public art. With Loveland’s art community in mind, the plaza is the perfect space for artwork to be displayed – everything from sculptures and murals to the possibility of changing exhibitions around the space.

Unique to The Foundry are the updated and activated alleyways, including the well-known Backstage Alley just behind the Rialto Theater. Each alleyway connects to the main urban square and provides an opportunity to build a different relationship between pedestrians and space. The alleys offer quiet areas to take strolls with friends, give new perspectives on nuances in the architecture, and allow alternative routes for way-finding and easy access to parking. The Foundry alleys feel much like older European cities with glowing string lights weaving above and outdoor seating for relaxing and socializing.

Not only does The Foundry provide an expansive outdoor area but it also features a variety of residential units, several offices, excellent ground level retail and dining, a movie theater, and a sizeable parking structure to accommodate the many uses of the site. The development has revitalized the downtown area and engages residents and visitors of Loveland with the creative passion that inspires the community. It is a dynamic epicenter bringing the artistic soul of Loveland right to the heart of downtown.

Since 2003, the Downtown Colorado, Inc. (DCI) Governor’s Awards for Downtown Excellence have recognized outstanding projects and people in Colorado that demonstrate creativity in the face of challenges, unlikely and enduring partnerships and dedication to community to further downtown initiatives. In 2020, the Governor’s Awards for Downtown Excellence serve as a celebration of accomplishments for communities and people in all of Colorado. As a Colorado firm, it’s an honor to be recognized for the revitalization of historic downtown Loveland. Thanks, DCI!
