When students can see work in progress, whether in labs, studios, or collaboration zones, it fosters a sense of participation. It invites curiosity and encourages interaction across disciplines. In higher education, this kind of visibility supports both culture-building and recruiting. It helps communicate the value of a program in an immediate, tangible way.

Designing for Learning by Doing

Based on proven data around student outcomes, institutions are placing greater value on hands-on, project-based learning. This approach requires more than specialized labs or isolated maker spaces. It depends on environments that support the making, testing, and presentation of ideas across departments.

Spaces designed for this kind of work are inherently shared. They allow students to move between disciplines, collaborate in teams, and communicate outcomes. When done well, these environments do more than support coursework. They help build confidence and prepare students to engage with complex, real-world problems.

Connections between indoor and outdoor environments, intuitive circulation, and shared gathering spaces all play a role. These elements help create places where students want to spend time, not just pass through. In many cases, a building becomes a front door for the program it houses and a key part of how an institution or department presents itself.

Looking Ahead

These shifts point to a broader evolution in how educational spaces are crafted. Spaces to support hands-on learning and cross-disciplinary collaboration are designed to be departmentally agnostic, so all are welcome to engage. Transparency is fundamental to creating an environment where students and visitors can be inspired by the creativity of others and feel invited to participate. Spaces must be crafted to encourage involvement from the business community, increasing students' opportunities for mentorship and professional network building.

All of these industry observations point to high expectations for campus buildings, which require a more interconnected design approach. Buildings must be designed to be magnetic, showcasing activity and innovation happening within, representing the campus brand, and creating campus spaces that bring people together. This merging of goals leads to a new, interconnected approach to design.

Campus buildings are legacy projects, expected to be useful assets for 50-100 years or more. This requires careful design and intentional flexibility so that they can adapt and remain relevant for years to come.
